How To Teach An Online Class
So you’re just starting off on your online teaching venture?
It can be difficult to know exactly what to do at the beginning, I was the same and everyone is, however overtime it will just become 2nd nature to you.
You’ll be able to teach with confidence and clarity in no time at all.
Now, to teach an online class successfully, there are some essential factors you should take into account firstly if you really want to offer the best learning experience for your students.
Otherwise, what’s the point?
So, we have rounded up 11 amazing tips here that you can apply easily that is going to create that fully rounded learning package that will just blow your students away!
Check these out!
1. Preparation Is Key
Like the old saying goes, ‘Failing to Prepare is Preparing to Fail’.
One of the most recognised sayings all of time and there’s good reason for that.
Because it’s true!
If you don’t have anything prepared before you begin teaching your class, it’s just not going to go down well and students will be able to pick up on it straight away.
Have everything set out before you start teaching.
If your teaching Yoga, have your Yoga mat laid out.
If you’re teaching coding, have all of your software loaded up.
Just don’t rush into it and start gathering or bringing things on screen last minute as it will come across very sloppy and deter students from carrying on with your course.
By having everything prepared beforehand, it will give you a sense of clarity so you know each step of your teachings and will provide better engagement through your classes showing that you know what your doing and talking about.
2. Adequate Environment
Still in the preparation phase here and a very important part.
You’ll want to make sure that you have the right environment when teaching your class.
Firstly choose somewhere where you can record your classes that the students can see everything clearly.
Nothing worse than watching a video with the sun glaring down the screen at you!
Next, choose a place where it’s quiet enough so that students can hear everything you say.
Imagine teaching a class from a room in your home with the window open and hearing the bin lorry in the background!
Yes – this did happen to me!
Wasn’t my best class I can tell you!
Now, the actual place you are teaching from – your visual area.
It needs to, in a way, represent what you are teaching.
What I mean by that is that it has to give you the best platform so that your classes are completely engaging and appealing to the student.
For example, would you teach beginners the guitar with a building site behind you?
Never mind the noise and the fact that the students can’t hear you but it draws their attention away.
You want a setting that is completely focused on what you’re teaching that can only make your students watch with concentration.
3. Learn Different Techniques
So what do I mean by that?
Well whenever you are teaching your class there are many different ways you can showcase what your teaching.
You could change up the environment to make it more appealing in your class videos.
You can change camera angles by zooming out at your entire self firstly talking and then changing angles to show certain areas of what your looking to teach.
Even on your course or course website, you can change the layout, colours, typography or calls to action to see what generates more people clicking onto your course.
There are numerous things you can do and you’ll only get to see what works best by simply testing them out.
4. Teach Your Students at Their Level
A very important aspect to your teaching!
Whether your teaching a class at beginner level or advanced – always take into account what level of training or experience your students may or may not have already.
For example, there would be no point teaching a beginner about advanced formulas on Excel if they’ve never used it before.
It would be like rocket science to them!
Just always keep in mind the students current or even no knowledge of the subject your teaching.
It will make for better engagement, better ratings and ultimately better conversion of sales!
5. Make Yourself Seen
This is something I would certainly consider doing!
I understand that it can be nerve wrecking to get in front of the camera, welcoming yourself and explaining how your class will benefit the student.
You may feel really awkward the first time you do it, however, I guarantee that after a few goes it’ll come 2nd nature to you!
The reason I suggest it so much is that people put their trust in people.
By actually seeing someone, a person, a human being behind the class it just makes it that bit more trustworthy and reassuring.
9 times out of 10 people will purchase a class or course with someone who shows themselves presenting it compared to someone who hasn’t.
So jump in front of the camera, shakes of those unnecessary nerves and begin teaching….in your way!
6. Speak Clearly & With Passion
Set the tone!
Your tone and way of speaking must be something that keeps your students engaged and actually enjoy hearing when being taught throughout your class.
Having a dull, unpassionate, long boring voice is going to make them lose interest very fast and either stop their learning or even worse yet – make them fall asleep!
So switch it up for a slightly higher pitched, invigorated and passionate voice.
Make the students feel like they’re being taught by someone who actually loves the subject they are learning.
They’ll have more faith in you and the class which will help them continue on their learning.
7. Create Interactivity & Engagement
You need to keep your students interest.
It’s the only way to keep them moving through your course effectively.
Use a variety of multimedia to really create that engagement with your students – images, videos, audios and texts.
Trust me, it will really help with their learning and keep them on the right path of moving forward!
Make your class interactive – by that I mean actually including the student within the course, it will help them with their learning as this is where they must apply the knowledge they have learned already.
This is amazing for promoting their applied learning and gives the student a feeling of progression.
8. Inject Motivation
Another very important factor!
Whatever a student is learning, overtime their motivation levels may start to slope downwards.
Your aim is to keep their interest and keep them motivated to continue on and complete the class.
In certain teaching platforms, you can check in on your students to see their progression.
If you see a student starting to slow down or even completely stop at a certain point, then you can send a quick email to see if they need any additional help.
Perfect for giving them that ‘nudge’ that they may need.
Whenever a student also completes a certain part of the class, you can also hit them up with a ‘High Five’!
It’s just a great way to let them know that you’re there and seeing how far they’ve come!
9. Offer Course Completion Certificates
An absolute excellent way of showing your students their accomplishments!
Offering course completion certificates will allow the student to see how far they have come, what they have learned and now they can go apply it to their own life!
A certificate at the end just really completes their learning and gives that feeling of breaking the tape across the finish line.
It’s simply a great way of saying well done, you’ve earned it!
10. Setup a Discussion Board
Discussion boards are excellent at increasing communication between you and the students or even between themselves.
It gives a sense of community and knowing that other like-minded people are looking for the same thing.
Here students can ask questions, provide their experience or let others know just how brilliant they think your class is!
A great motivation booster!
Be present within your discussion board and let your students know that you’re always there for them.
11. Ask for a Rating
Last but not least, ask for a rating!
Ratings is your best way of attracting new students to your course.
Obviously, the good ratings that is!
The more and better ratings you have – the more income potential for you.
You see, the first thing people look for when purchasing anything is ratings or reviews.
The better ratings you have, the more trustworthy you seem and likeliness is that people will end up buying from you.
So, by implementing all of these tips, you’ll be able to create an excellent, engaging learning experience and this is your chance to get something back from your students.
Ask for a rating and most of the time students will offer incredible feedback.
Well, there you have it, 11 incredible tips that you can use to help improve your online class!
